Six Barrels totally instagrammable but also delicious

You know how we feel about Monterey, so it should be no sur­prise to you that we were very very excited when we heard that Joseph was open­ing up a new fact­ory in which to bottle his deli­cious syr­ups, which is also a cafe too.  Six Bar­rel Soda Co has found a home in the old Eva Dix­on’s (which has been sev­er­al cafes since then, but will always be Eva Dix­on’s prob­ably. EDIT: but if you were unfa­mil­i­ar with it, it’s upstairs on the corner of Eva and Dix­on Streets, with access off Eva St), and the space is a delight to behold – open, airy and stacked with inter­est­ing magazines like Lucky Peach to read. You can read more about its design in this piece from Urbis. Need­less to say, this place is made for ins­tagram­ming. But before I let loose with pic­tures from all my friends, let me tell you about what’s on offer.

First and fore­most – sodas. Cur­rently fla­vours include lime, lem­on & rasp­berry, ginger, vanilla cream, cherry & pomegranate and kola nut, but appar­ently fla­vours will change with sea­son­al avail­ab­il­it­ies. I’ve been work­ing my way through them, both straight up and also as ice cream floats, and I think that lem­on & rasp­berry is my favour­ite, and kola nut is not to my taste.The sodas are also avail­able in oth­er places around town, or you can take some of the syr­up home with you too (they’ll even sell you one of those fancy siphon things if you wanna get all posh on it). Behold the pretty sodas!

For food, there’s a range of salted snacks like spiced nuts or peas and amaz­ing kettle chips. They do three kinds of mini bur­gers called sliders – hal­loumi,  tofu and beef & ched­dar. Monterey reg­u­lars will be famil­i­ar with how deli­cious these bur­gers are, although they’re in a dif­fer­ent kind of bun. They’re $8 each (or $11 for a soda combo) and come with a hand­ful of the tasty potato chips. If you have a mighty appet­ite, you might want two. There’s also three kinds of bagel (cream cheese & jam, tomato and hum­mus, smoked sal­mon & cream cheese) and jolly big cheese scones from Brook­lyn Bakery. Appar­ently there is also a brunch menu avail­able on week­ends offer­ing three dif­fer­ent kinds of scramble, but I haven’t tried that out yet. Oh, and of course as this is Wel­ling­ton, there is also peoples cof­fee and single ori­gin fil­ter served bot­tom­less. Appar­ently they will soon be serving craft beers too. I can­’t wait.

Six Bar­rels is cur­rently my favour­ite place to have lunch, and if you go there, it may very well become your favour­ite place too. That’s fine, there is enough space for us all. After the jump, let’s get our ins­tagram on!
