Six Barrels totally instagrammable but also delicious
You know how we feel about Monterey, so it should be no surprise to you that we were very very excited when we heard that Joseph was opening up a new factory in which to bottle his delicious syrups, which is also a cafe too. Six Barrel Soda Co has found a home in the old Eva Dixon’s (which has been several cafes since then, but will always be Eva Dixon’s probably. EDIT: but if you were unfamiliar with it, it’s upstairs on the corner of Eva and Dixon Streets, with access off Eva St), and the space is a delight to behold – open, airy and stacked with interesting magazines like Lucky Peach to read. You can read more about its design in this piece from Urbis. Needless to say, this place is made for instagramming. But before I let loose with pictures from all my friends, let me tell you about what’s on offer.
First and foremost – sodas. Currently flavours include lime, lemon & raspberry, ginger, vanilla cream, cherry & pomegranate and kola nut, but apparently flavours will change with seasonal availabilities. I’ve been working my way through them, both straight up and also as ice cream floats, and I think that lemon & raspberry is my favourite, and kola nut is not to my taste. The sodas are also available in other places around town, or you can take some of the syrup home with you too (they’ll even sell you one of those fancy siphon things if you wanna get all posh on it). Behold the pretty sodas!
For food, there’s a range of salted snacks like spiced nuts or peas and amazing kettle chips. They do three kinds of mini burgers called sliders – halloumi, tofu and beef & cheddar. Monterey regulars will be familiar with how delicious these burgers are, although they’re in a different kind of bun. They’re $8 each (or $11 for a soda combo) and come with a handful of the tasty potato chips. If you have a mighty appetite, you might want two. There’s also three kinds of bagel (cream cheese & jam, tomato and hummus, smoked salmon & cream cheese) and jolly big cheese scones from Brooklyn Bakery. Apparently there is also a brunch menu available on weekends offering three different kinds of scramble, but I haven’t tried that out yet. Oh, and of course as this is Wellington, there is also peoples coffee and single origin filter served bottomless. Apparently they will soon be serving craft beers too. I can’t wait.
Six Barrels is currently my favourite place to have lunch, and if you go there, it may very well become your favourite place too. That’s fine, there is enough space for us all. After the jump, let’s get our instagram on!
Am so very keen to check Six Barrels out. Do you know if anything on their menu would be alright for a gluten free friend of mine?
So where is this place ? sorry very confused I cant readily see an address etc
Sorry, it’s upstairs on the corner of Eva & Dixon streets – access is off Eva Street.
Six Barrel, not Six Barrels
Definitely will check this out during next month’s visit!
I finally had a chance to try one of the syrups in a hot drink. Joe was happy to list off options that he thought worked well and I tested out raspberry and lemon.
Yes.
Six Barrel Soda Co. very kindly gave us some of their soda for the launch of e-Cycle last week and it was a big hit with lots of people taking a closer look at the beautiful bottles.
